A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Castor canadensis
The North American Beaver, an ecosystem engineer, is primarily a nocturnal species. These beavers are the largest rodents in North America reaching an average of 40lbs and can be over 3ft long. Depending on the body of water, beavers will build lodges, dams, or dens. If the body of water maintains a constant level then they will not build dams. Freestanding lodges and bank dens are used for safety, raising young, and warmth. They actually do not hibernate.
