Chelepteryx chalepteryx
This moth would have had a wing span of about 10 cms. Fire wings showed bands of shades of brown and white. Antennae were thin and short - probably a female.
Spotted under bright lights at the local fire station - backing on to a National Park.
Thanks to my friend, an officer of the local fire brigade, for donating this spotting to be posted on PN.
This moth has dramatically coloured hind wings which it displays when disturbed. It also tucks its abdomen under its wings if under threat. Hopefully I'd be able to get a shot of the hind wings next time.
Family: Anthelidae
