Description:

There were several of these flies (family Platystomatidae) gathered on a leaf (picture #2) feeding on something brown and sludgy. About 1cm in length with the red eyes at the end of stalks; base colour is yellow with a stripe-pattern on thorax, abdomen is brown.

Habitat:

Rainforest around Lake Eacham in the Atherton Tablelands of far North Queensland, Australia.
