Purple Iris (Purple Flag)

Iris germanica

Description:

Iris germanic a is a bearded iris, and a perennial that is in flower from May to June (best planted earlier, though). Each is composed of six perianth segments, and the beard can be seen as the yellow tufts (though, usually white). The flowers are hermaphroditic (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by insects. The plant is also self-fertile. There are hundreds of different varieties of irises, coming in all sorts of colours, shapes, and sizes. These different iris varieties are found all over the world. In some cuisines, flowers are used as a garnish - this flower is no exception, and would make an exceptionally beautiful addition to any garden, dish, or centrepiece! The flowers also smell wonderful, slightly sweet, and not at all overpowering (I find they almost smell like liquorice!).

Habitat:

Iris germanica is probably native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region, but it has become established all over the temperate world and can be found growing on road shoulders and old home sites throughout much of the U.S. and Europe.
