Bornean Ground Cuckoo

Carpococcyx radiceus

Description:

Large terrestrial species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family. Endemic to the island of Borneo.

Habitat:

Restricted to humid forest. Shows a clear preference for alluvial and swamp forest within dry dipterocarp lowland forest below 500 m, over higher elevation, slope or ridge forest. It inhabits the forest floor, feeding on arthropods and fruit, and sometimes following army-ant swarms

Notes:

We were fortunate to see two of these shy birds and believe the male was doing a mating dance to court the female. Unfortunately the undergrowth was too dense to get a photo. Finally got a clear shot when one went up a tree and as it flew over the river. The in-flight photo was over-exposed but makes quite a cool shot! Like a phoenix in flight?
