Painted Turtle (Juvenile)

Chrysemys picta

Description:

Small pond turtle basking on a log near edge of large pond. Carapace (top shell) length approx. 2 1/2 inches. Since basking turtles are so skittish and quickly dive in the water, I was far back when taking this photo with a telephoto zoom lens.

Habitat:

Very common throughout North America in ponds, lakes and aquatic habitats with slow-moving waters.
