American Bison

Bison bison

Description:

The American Bison is the largest land mammal in North America. Bulls may weigh as much as 318 to 1,000 kg (700 to 2,200 lb), but some bulls may get heavier. Cows are smaller and tend towards brown. Bulls are brown with darker necks and heads. Fur on the front quarters tend to be thicker, especially in winter when these animals tend to face storms.

Habitat:

Prairies and savannas, but can also be found in open forests and forest clearings.

Notes:

I just got back from a trip to Yellowstone National Park. It's the season of youngsters there and we found lots of young animals. This particular bison calf had just swum the Madison River and seemed to be happy to be out of the cold water.

Yes, I debated about putting the second photo first. I like that one very much as well. Those little bison calves were a lot of fun to watch.
