Pied avocet

Recurvirostra avosetta

Description:

Striking black and white bird. Long black long and long black bill which curves upwards. Black cap extending down the neck. Appears completely white underneath in flight, except for two black triangles on the wing ends.

Habitat:

Spotted on salt flats.

Notes:

Photographed in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The aerial displays were to warn off other birds as the avocets had a lot of young feeding at the water's edge.

Thanks, Sachin Zaveri. These avocets where the most active I have ever seen, perhaps due to the presence of young.
