Argia plana
These damselflies were landing on the dead leaves of a forest floor. Very easy to photograph - they would fly away and a few seconds later would land on a leaf about 10 inches away from my lens. An excellent example of an organism blending in visually with their environment.
Thank you for your ID help Emma! I've edited this spotting with the Springwater Dancer info.
If you leave it as an unknown spotting ,oxyjack or bayucca might be able to help.
Thank you for your help Emma, that link did help. The range on BugGuide.net said that the vivid dancer is a western species. I searched some more and found a USGS page with damselflies of Missouri - http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/distr.... I went through these but don't feel confident on an ID yet. I'll label it at the Family level for now - Coenagrionidae. I think it might be a Dancer from the Genus Argia... your ID and link led me in that direction, so thank you!
