Yes, Cantharidae (soldier beetles) is the right family. It looks like Malthacus piniphilus (= Podabrus piniphilus, = Dichelotarsus piniphilus) or one of its close relatives (M. lygarius is another possible candidate). 2 cm must be an overestimate. These beetles rarely get larger than 10 mm.
