Brown Huntsman Spider

Heteropoda venatoria

Description:

This is a large, common spider often seen in the Floridian nightscape. The brown huntsman spider reaches a leg span of about five inches and is found over much of the world -- the Southeastern United States, Asia, Australia... They are indeed a malleable and adaptable species. Males have distinctive markings on the carapace; females tend to be a more consistent brown. This particular behemoth was photographed on my parents' backyard fence in Mt. Dora, Florida on 27 May 2012 (just after midnight). They are *very* common throughout Mt. Dora.
