Red-bellied Woodpecker

Melanerpes carolinus

Description:

Medium woodpecker, black-and-white barred upperparts, pale gray-brown underparts with indistinct red wash on belly. Head has bright red crown and nape, pale brown face. White rump, white wing patches, and white-barred central tail feathers are visible in flight.

Red bellied because they actually have a splotch of redish or soft red feathers on their underside. ;-) If you ever get a chance to see one standing on a branch, you will notice the coloring. it's very soft and often times not there if the bird is young. The older adults will get more coloration to their underside as they age.
