Oyster Mushrooms

Pleurotus sp.

Description:

Broad, fan-shaped cap. These mushrooms ranged in size from 7-10 inches. Cream-colored cap, stipe, and gills. The margins are inrolled, smooth, and wavy.

Habitat:

Growing out of logs on a wet forest floor.

Notes:

This genus includes some of the most widely eaten mushrooms, and also the most commonly cultivated edible mushrooms in the world. Interestingly, some Pleurotus fungi can be used in the mycoremediation of pollutants, such as petroleum and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Mycoremediation is a process in which fungi are used to decontaminate an area that has been exposed to pollutants.
