Massassauga Rattler

Sistrurus catenatus

Description:

A medium sized pit viper... pretty snake with a generally calm disposition, preferring to rattle and warn than to strike. Distinctive scale (hexagonal) patterns and obvious rattle on tail.

Habitat:

forest, scrub in central Ontario, Canada, and extending in a range southwest all the way to the Mexican border.

Notes:

Hemotoxins injected by bite are just as nasty as other pit vipers, although the volume of venom injected is generally less than with many larger pit vipers.
