Slender Beefly

Geron dispar

Description:

A small beefly about 5 mm long with a humped thorax and long slightly slender abdomen. Both thorax and abdomen were covered with short stiff golden setae. Eyes were large and red with three silver spots between them and on either side of dark antennae (pic 4). The fly had a long proboscis with a bifid tip (pic 3)
Wings were slightly tinted but clear.

Habitat:

Spotted feeding on flowers on a Queen Anne's Lace ( Daucus carota) in a nature reserve.

Notes:

This beefly was so intent on feeding that it did not mind my presence. I did not get to see it in flight which was disappointing. A good find for me though!
