Hi sarah in the woods. I deleted my comment, because I became less sure your spider actually was a trashline orb weaver: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/424.... There are some similarities but, as you say, differences too. The proportions of your spider seem off for an American house spider. At any rate, I enjoy your spottings and I'll be interested to see what happens next!

suzmonk, I was waiting to get to a computer before I answered your comment so I could check out my pics and your suggestion closer, so I don't know where your comment went. ? Anyway, i looked up the trashline orb weaver - very interesting! the line of wrapped bugs in my pictures does look similar. However, my spider has a round abdomen and the web was definitely a tangled one rather than an orb, so I think I'll keep my original ID and be on the lookout for a spider like yours. Thanks for the tip!
