Knobbly Crab Spider

Stephanopis altifrons

Description:

Crab like spider medium in size about the equivalent to a 20cent peice , if it was on bark would not have spotted this one . Very knobbly and spiny - light tan and brown

Habitat:

Was sitting arms outstretched and motionless - i thought it was deceased at first , till a nudge and it was very alive and alert.

Notes:

The Stephanopinae are mostly drab-coloured and cryptic or well-camoufaged spiders with laterigrade legs, capable of moving them sideways like a crab, lacking true claw tufts but having strong paired spines on the underneath of the tibiae. The eyes are set on a common tubercle to the front of the cephalothorax. They often have extremely complex external body shapes to help with camouflage. In the wild they are almost impossible to discern unless moving http://www.arachne.org.au/01_cms/details... I am thinking along the lines of a Stephanopis sp ..but no expert and appreciate any help...or a confirmation.
