Barred Conger

Poeciloconger fasciatus

Description:

A richly-colored congrid with a stiff caudal fin that's adapted for rapid backward burrowing. Also known as Barred Sand Conger, it grows up to 60cm in length.

Habitat:

Lives beneath the sand of lagoons and seaward reefs, at depths of 2 to 32m. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

Spotted this eel during a night dive in about 12m of water at Dayang Beach, Talikud Island.

Hi Blogie - I wasn't actually suggesting it was that as I didn't know there is a leopard eel; it just made me think of that with those spots. It is a cool-looking eel!

Hi Maria, thanks! Actually, there is such an eel called Leopard Eel (Myrichthys pardalis). This one, however, doesn't look to be that species. Its head is more pointed and the spots look different.
