Thanks gatorfellows! I've checked out photos of juveniles of both species & this guy doesn't seem to match either so I'm not really sure what he is!

Karen, it sure looks like a tri-colored night heron to me.

Juvenile little blue herons have the bill markings of the dark tip and bluish grayish color, but tricolor have yellow on the lower bill. good luck
