Grus grus
Large wading bird. Mostly gray. Patch of red on crown. Broad white stripe extends from behind eye down back of neck. "Hangy" tuft of tail feathers.
Thol Lake where they were congregating for the night. The cacophony as each flock descended had to be heard to be believed. Unfortunately (or perhaps from the avian perspective, fortunately) there was no way to approach any closer. 50 X zoom was also not good enough.

lovely, sukanya!!do these migrate from Siberia? You must enlarge and frame!!
Thanks. It was a fabulous experience...standing there watching the birds come home. The water wasn't very deep and the rest of my family was teasingly egging me on....:) @Neil Ross.
I saw this one but failed to comment. It is a great spotting, and I think a brilliant photo. I'm sure a longer lens would have lost some of the magic you've captured. Very nice :-)
Thank you, KathleenMcEachern...we heard the birds overhead and almost felt the breeze from their wings...I could even see the drawn up legs...and then as the flocks gathered the extremely LOUD cacophony as they jostled to adjust....it was so similar to trying to cram into an already crowded hall...it was a lovely experience...but then dark fell swiftly and photography was not possible any more. So glad you like the spotting.
Love the feeling of abundance that these photos give!
