Starburst Anemone

Anthopleura sola

Description:

The starburst anemone is just one of over 1,000 types of sea anemones found throughout the world. They cling to rocky or coral surfaces with their venom-filled tentacles stretched out, patiently waiting for any unlucky fish to swim into its harmless looking trap. Sea anemone can vary in size, from one half inch all the way too six feet (1.8 meters) in diameter.

Habitat:

It lives in the lower intertidal zone in rocky habitats, often in the shelter of cracks and crevices.

Notes:

This particular individual was about six inches in diameter.
