Sistrurus miliarius barbouri
The dusky pigmy rattlesnake is a small, venomous viper found in the American southeast. They are usually shorter than two feet in length. Even smaller are their rattles -- so small, in fact, you can barely hear them when they rattle. Duskies, as their name implies, tend to come out at dawn and dusk during the warmer months. They are shy, reclusive, and seemingly-nervous snakes. Though they are venomous and are rattlesnakes, one need not be frightened of this species. They would much rather keep their distance than confront a person. [jansonjones http://dusttracks.com]
