Mourning Cloak

Nymphalis antiopa

Description:

Large mostly brown butterfly above and below with prominent white to cream margins on the upper side of the wings. Upper wing also has bright blue spots on the forword edge of the upper wing behind the white margi.

Habitat:

Open areas both in rural and urban areas

Notes:

This is the first year I've observed this beautiful butterfly in our area. It seems to be relatively common this year.
