Regal Moth larva

Description:

85-90 mm. long and 14-15 mm. wide, not including the spines.

Habitat:

Foliage of hardwood trees in a mesophytic forest of the central Appalachian mountains.

Notes:

In the larval stage, this animal is commonly known as a Hickory Horned Devil. The adult is also known as a Royal Walnut Moth. Although it has an intimidating appearance, these larvae are not dangerous to handle.
