A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Trichoglossus haematodus
Very interesting! I've been using the Canberra Ornithological Group's website - there was a count of around 100 birds about 5 years ago (the group does an excellent survey). Numbers have probably increased since then, but i haven't noticed any around the suburbs (or on the odd bushwalk). Time will tell if they decide to muscle in more :)
It looks like they should be around the are... http://bie.ala.org.au/species/Trichoglos...
Thanks for the mission pointer.
I used to live in Sydney and the lorikeets were everywhere screeching up a storm, but i think it is a bit cold in Canberra and also they might be out competed by rosellas. There's a few small flocks but they're suspected to have originated from ex-pet birds. IN any case, i've never seen one wild around here. Cheers
That surprises me a little Joanne. We get heaps of these in Melbourne and I know they are right along the east coast to New Guinea and the Solomons. Maybe Canberra is a bit too cold. Anyway you might want to add this to the mission for captive animals then... http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/7973...
Unfortunately, i photographed this guy in an aviary (he's missing a foot!) not in the wild. Not many Lorikeets in the wild around Canberra (not a local species).
