Grey Huntsman Spider

Holconia immanis, family Sparassidae

Description:

Huntsman spiders belong to the Family Sparassidae (formerly Heteropodidae) and are famed as being the hairy so-called 'tarantulas' on house walls that terrify people by scuttling out from behind curtains.

Habitat:

Huntsman Spiders have a flattened body, which allows them to find shelter under loosened bark and other litter. They have eight eyes set in two rows of four. This one lives in my house and I am sure it is over 3 years old!

Notes:

Nocturnal hunter able to walk on vertical walls, including glass, and on ceilings. Tend to be placid but very sensitive to wind. Preyed upon in houses by Asian Gecko and introduced Daddy-long-legs (Pholcus phalagioides). Presumably one of the causes of car crashes as the wind around the car drives the spider inside onto the windscreen. They love to travel..

Must have stepped in something delicious. I'm too old to do that now.
