Small Cabbage White

Pieris rapae

Description:

The Cabbage White is a small to medium sized white/yellow butterfly in the family Pieridae. The upper sides of their wings are creamy white with black tips on the forewings. The butterfly in this spotting is a female, which can be distinguished from males by the two black spots on their forewings whereas males only have one black spot. The underside of their wings are tinged pale yellow and peppered with black speckles.

Habitat:

The Cabbage White is native to Europe, Asia and South Africa. It was later accidentally introduced to Canada where it then began to spread to the United States. The most common host plants for Cabbage Whites are from the mustard family, which when eaten by Cabbage White caterpillars helps them to avoid predators due to the unpleasant taste the plant gives them.

Notes:

I found this tiny gal darting about some low laying greenery near a patch of pokeweed.
