Blue catfish

Ictalurus furcatus

Description:

Blue catfish were caught at this location in the Patuxent River as part of an electrofishing survey by the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Blue catfish are a nonnative fish species in Chesapeake Bay, and have recently been declared as an invasive species by both Virginia and Maryland. It is important to understand their current distribution in Chesapeake Bay tributaries. For the purposes of reporting the locations of all blue catfish caught during this survey, this photo will be used multiple times.
