Northern Pacific Rattlesnake

Crotalus oreganus oreganus

Description:

The Northern Pacific Rattlesnake is the only species of rattlesnake in the central California. And rattlesnakes are the only species of snake in California that is venomous. With the narrow front and back, thick middle and wide jaws you can easily tell this from Gopher snakes. Most will have a rattle but some may lose theirs.

Habitat:

This was spotted in the mountains of native scrub. Found during a hot day on an unpaved road

yeah after I gave him a push. This weekend was busy and many cars were leaving. I wanted to make sure it didn't get run over. So I took a long branch and nudged it a few times till it took the hint. It never rattled either.
