Jabiru (Black-necked Stork)

Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus

Description:

Large black and white Australian wading bird, long red coloured legs, long thick beak, metallic green/blue/purple sheen on black head and neck, also wings, white area on wings more visible in flight, white body and underparts, males have dark eyes, females have yellow eyes. Very wary and difficult to get close to. Soars high on thermals but efforts to land and take flight appear difficult for such a large bird. Feeds on fish, aquatic life, eels and snakes that frequent waterways as it stalks through shallow water often flushing prey with an impressive opening of both wings.

Habitat:

Coastal country along east coastand inland waters of Australia, prefers swamps with open paddocks, open quiet waterways where wading is possible.

Notes:

One of a pair that live in the area. They have recently 'reclaimed' their stake in the swamp after an influx of visitors numbering in the hundreds consisting of Straw-necked Ibis, White Ibis and various egrets. The majority of birds have moved on to new areas after recent rain filled more waterholes throughout the country.
