The male Gadwall has a fine pattern of gray, black and brown. They have a large black patch on their rear. Their heads are large and squarish with a steep forehead. Females have a thin yellow edge to their dark bills. Females are a buff and brown color. They have a white wing patch that is often visible when swimming or resting. They feed by tipping over to feed on submerged vegetation or by stealing food from other dabbling ducks and coots.
