Osmunda vachellii
According to the signboard at Jinshagou Nature Reserve, this ancient fern has "kind of medicinal functions of curing bleeding wound, fire wound, scald, furuncle, carbuncle and mumps."
very wet, subtropical valley
I spotted this at Jinshagou Nature Reserve. It wasn't a very popular reserve for foreigners. I had the whole place to myself when I visited in the beginning of winter but surprisingly, they had signboards with english on them and they were fairly informative.

no need to remove the common name...I was just not aware of that species. You broadened my horizons!
Yes, ceherzog. Actually there was no common name provided and I didn't want to call it just a fern so I added the royal, that I saw was used for some other species but maybe I should remove it. Maybe it's too confusing? I'm not sure of a common name for this one.
Looks so different from our Royal Fern, Osmunda regalis
