Gray Rat Snake

Pantherophis obsoletus spiloides

Description:

Another gray rat snake! Indeed, gray rat snakes are extremely abundant in and around Valdosta, Georgia -- particularly at Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area. I often see them in the blackgum and pond cypress swamp at Grand Bay, taking advantage of the thick foliage and tangles of vegetation in the area. Gray rat snakes are non-venomous snakes. Their phylogenetic classification --along with all New World ratsnakes-- has undergone significant debate in recent years. The taxonomy listed here is one of several argued classifications. This is spectacular Janson! What a beauty. I like all of the photos capturing close-ups and images of the entire animal.
