Box Elder Beetle Nymphs

Boisea trivittata

Description:

This red and black insect could fit onto a dime. It has six legs and very long antennae. It was able to climb the inside of a plastic bucket but didn't appear to have wings. (I never saw it fly).

Habitat:

It was one among many of the same type of insect. All were concentrated on the ground near a hole left by a decomposed root. This was in our back-yard, so there was shade, grass, and dirt. Temperature was around 100 deg. F. and they were all very active.

Notes:

Sorry for the blurry picture. I'm still working on the close up for my camera!
