Australian White Ibis 'congregation'

Threskiornis moluccus

Description:

Industrial Ibis? This "congregation" have decided to call a demolition site home while there is water available, and the water is green with algae. Groups of birds can also be called a "stand" and also a "wedge", and this gathering is approximately 50 birds strong. With so many lovely parks and water foreshore areas nearby, it amazes me that this would be their location of choice. This was not a chemical site, so I doubt the ground water would be overly toxic.

Habitat:

An old industrial estate in Sydney's inner-west. The site was part of an old flour mill, now undergoing partial demolition and redevelopment into apartments. The site is usually dry, but after a few days of rain the pool appeared and the Ibis moved in.

Thanks, Desmond. I was kinda disappointed myself, but it was interesting to watch them for a while. I was in the area photographing the building, particularly the grain silos. I was thrilled to see the Ibis there as well.

Thanks, Bruno. A pity it wasn't a picturesque site.
