Gray Hairstreak

Strymon melinus

Description:

Small gray butterfly with white, orange, and black markings and black "tails" on hindwings. This is the most widespread hairstreak butterfly in North America. Caterpillars feed on plants in the pea (Fabaceae) and mallow (Malvaceae) families including beans (Phaseolus), clovers (Trifolium), cotton (Gossypium), and mallow (Malva).

Habitat:

Nectaring on basil (Ocimum basilicum) in urban sidewalk garden.
