Family Asilidae
This powerfully built robber fly was not as hairy as the ones I usually find. It did have the characteristic elongated body with a tapered abdomen, and a bearded face with a prominent mystax (mustache).
As is typical of predatory flies, this robber fly was perched high on a plant, in an exposed location, in a meadow.
The name "robber flies" perfectly describes their notoriously aggressive, predatory habits. These flies feed mainly on other insects and capture their prey by waiting to ambush and then capture their prey while in flight.
