Endoxyla encalypti
A very large moth of 160mm wingspan. Finely hatched grey and black wings with a broken white flash along it's flanks. The head is high with white around the front and sides and a crown of rich buff with a deep turquoise perimeter and distinctive tufts at the rear. Abdomen is long and heavy with furry dark and light bars.
Resting on a stone wall under powerful security lights at the local primary school. Near midnight.
The larval stage of these moths are known as Witjuti grubs in some parts of Australia.
The large fatty grubs feed and pupate inside acacia stems.
