Neocicada hieroglyphica
More cicada goodness from Valdosta, Georgia! This is a hieroglyphic cicada, one of the smaller cicadas in the American southeast. I heard the cicada singing while I was weed whacking in the backyard. When I turned the whacker off, the cicada fell silent. When I turned it back on, the cicada sang again. And thus was born an entirely new way of locating a cicada in a tree: by call-and-responsing with a freakin' weed whacker. It was awesome. [jansonjones http://dusttracks.com]

amazingly captured,
cool insect and nice story on how you found it!
Thank you, Courtney!
Very cool. Thanks for sharing. You're a wonderful writer :)
Courtney! Short version of the process of finding this cicada was in the description. A fuller, clearer version of the story is on my blog here: http://dusttracks.com/2012/06/25/neocica.... In short: it's all about tracking their sound!
Definitely. It does make for a cool photo. This might be an odd question but how do you find a Cicada? I hear them often but have never seen one.
Courtney: yes. The cicada is pointed upwards and I'm shooting down from over the top of the head! Odd angle, right?
Is the first photo looking down on the Cicada?
Lol, thought this was a frog's face!
