Painted Turtle

Chrysemys picta

Description:

Shell was about 6 inches long or so. Head and tail with yellow markings. Neck with red markings

Habitat:

Small, muddy pond surrounded by woodlot in suburban area.

Notes:

There were a number of these turtles seen swimming near the surface of this pond. This was the largest.

Thank you for the information. I am trying to learn more about turtles. Where I am if you see red it is most likely the slider. I am more of a butterfly person, but trying to expand my knowledge. This is what is great about Project Noah.

I only know because I have a painted turtle and a red-eared slider as pets. Red-eared sliders have a red stripe on their necks. This is a mature adult painted turtle (most likely female). It has a reddish coloration around the base of the neck, not a stripe.

I think you might be right. Took a serious look at the shell. Good eye.
