Geina tenuidactylus
wild looking moth, wingspan is about 17 mm
temperate forest, near dry falls
I spotted this while hiking in Short Hills. I stopped at a lookout over a gorge and dry waterfall. The tiny moth was on a leaf over the the barrier. I've never seen anything like this before here. Looks like something I would see in the tropical rainforest.
Thanks Jake and carlybm for the ID. Thanks Larry, Noe and Pili, Yogesh and Dixie for the super nice comments. Yes, Dixie, only 17mm, less than one inch. You're right Larry they are hard to photograph. I was lucky this one stayed still and let me get very close.
These are pretty cool. I have shot a couple too. I have seen one big one about 10mm but most around here range around 4-6mm. Great shots. They are so long and thin it is nearly impossible to get good ones.!
I think you're right, it looks like your spotting. Let me know when BugGuide ID's it.
That is exactly what I was thinking, though many species of Geina are quite similar. Geina tenuidactylus looks very similar, as it is one of the darkest species of Geina.
Here is one moth I found that I believe is Geina tenuidactylus. I am currently waiting for ID by BugGuide, because I have noticed almost all species of Geina look quite the same.

I think you're right jgorneau. Looks a lot like G. tenuidactylus. What do you think?
