Cecropia Moth

Hyalophora cecropia

Description:

North America's largest moth, see notes about PN in real time

Habitat:

urban

Notes:

This spotting was all about Project Noah in action real time! Newbie spotter JairOxford posted a spotting of a Cecropia Moth from my own city saturday morning while I was online. The moth was in the patio of a Boston Pizza of all places. One of Jair's coworkers told him about PN and Jair posted it. I asked him about it and it sounded like the moth was resting and not moving much. So I got in my car and drove down there. It was amazing to see it just chilling. The is only the second Cecropia moth I have ever seen. The first I spotted had its wings closed and I wanted a shot of them open. I finally got that this time.

Thanks a lot Mayra, Paul and Sudachi. Many times I'm only able to get one decent image with a butterfly or moth, but not this time. This Cecropia cooperated very well!

Thanks Leuba, Sumukha and Courtney. I agree, it is too beautiful to be real. One of my favorite spottings for sure.

Great story Dan. This moth is too beautiful to be real - looks like he's a mural done with pastels. So lucky to see him...Well done JairOxford
