Striped Honeyeater

Plectorhyncha lanceolata

Description:

An active, wary bird, adults growing to just under 25cm. Grey toned coluring with distinctive dark thin flecks or stripes over head, neck and upper back areas. Feathers appear spiky on neck and throat. White or buff coloured belly, throat, chest. Slight brown tint to feathers on back, wings and tail. Beautiful melodious call. Often associates with Grey Butcherbirds and will make its own nest close to the nests of these Butcherbirds as well. Forages on insects, nectar and fruit. Often seen in pairs or small groups.

Habitat:

Range of varied habitats throughout the eastern regions of Australia.

Thanks James. I was really pleased to hear and see these birds here. Not the clearest of images as they won't allow me too close - yet. These birds almost shadow the butcherbirds wherever they go - some long-term relationship there that benefits both species.
