Spotted Orbweaver Spider

Neoscona crucifera

Description:

Reddish-brown to brown. Range from 8.5 to 19.7 mm in length. Legs are banded with reddish-brown and pale yellow markings, N. crucifera have brown femora.

Habitat:

Moist wooded area, on or near buildings. This one was found in shrubs adjacent to a house.

Notes:

This one was suspended from a shrub and completed its web in about an hour. The web was orb-shaped more the 3 feet in height and width. When I returned in the morning it was gone. Went back for a second night and it was back in the same location with a brand new web. This one appears to be missing a leg.

I wondered where the web went. I'm moving in a few weeks and while I'd like the widows to stay I wish I could bring this one with me.

I once watched an orb weaver early in the morning eating her whole web. They are masters of recycling!
