Monk Parrots

Myiopsitta monachus

Description:

I took these in the most off the wall place. If you ever travel to Everman Texas if you go down town area you'll find the birds making a racket. They are very colorful and fun to watch but they are problematic for the locals. They live in small colonies which are in one mega nest kind of like the Purple Martin (in Living style) The Nests are large and often found on electrical poles.

Habitat:

Mainly Tropical areas however these are probably from a released origin from long ago. They are only found in the down town Everman area in the US in the rural/ urban area.

Notes:

This spotting was one that is one of my more exotic specimens in my photo collection. I first remember hearing talk of these parrots at my high school in one of my agriculture classes. I wondered and said to myself impossible we don't live in a tropical area. However we took a little journey after my aunt heard about them. We went into downtown Everman and saw the enormous nests but thought they were deserted. that was back in 2010. Then recently on February fourth me and my grandmother took a little excursion after college and got some incredible shots. These were captured at the same wash mat that I too the pictures of the Red-Winged Blackbirds. The Nests are huge and can hold possibly a good amount to one colony. They remind me of the Purple Martin which lives in tight colonies or groups. These parrots do make up fast chatter they squeaky noisy squawky noise. They are being dubbed problematic in the city of Everman because the birds build their large nest condos upon the electrical boxes and I see the problems that concern the city because the electricians cant easily get through the twisted plant matter without disturbing the nesting sites. This is both bad news for the birds and humans; and it gets even worse like if one of those transformers blows the nests can catch fire and cause a possible fire in town and also in turn kill the birds, The birds in my best theory make their happy but dangerous homes on the electrical boxes because of the good support. the nests are well made indeed almost nothing could get through. A feline which is a prime example of a bird predator would have a hard time climbing the steep pole that he would fall off or worse get stuck. These bird are in the downtown area only so far as I know and they are beautiful but yet they are making life harder for them and the people who live in the same community as well. they are not native they are possibly of a pet shop which may have accidently let loose a breeding pair and it just exploded in invasive numbers. This just shows the dangers of accidently release or purpose release and then the creatures become a nuisance. Sad but true.
