Deer Fly

Chrysops sp.

Description:

About 11 mm in length. I suspect this is Chrysops univittatus, but don't know for sure. The range is right. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a photo in which I could see the entire fly and all of its characteristics.

Habitat:

Uplands near wetlands.

Notes:

These flies pestered me all day as I tried to get photos of other subjects. They can bite pretty hard and are persistent, often buzzing around one's head to the point of distraction. The eyes on deerflies are absolutely fantastic!
