Australian King-Parrot (male)

Alisterus scapularis scapularis

Description:

A gorgeous male King-Parrot. These males are "the only Australian parrots with a completely red head. [They] have a red belly and a green back, with green wings and a long green tail." (Birdlife Australia - http://www.birdlife.org.au/bird-profile/... )

Habitat:

Hanging out near the picnic table at the Bunya Mountains.

Notes:

The Bunya Mountains National Park is my old stomping ground from when I was a kid. Way back then we would arm ourselves with birdseed (there are dedicated feeding times nowadays) would stretch out our arms and become inundated with King-Parrots and Crimson Rosellas (Platycercus elegans). They would march up and down our arms, land on our heads and argue with each other about who gets the seed. On my visit before this one (outside of feeding times), I did not see a single King-Parrot or Crimson Rosella. On this trip, this is one of two King-Parrots (both males) that I saw plus a single Crimson Rosella. Things sure have changed since way back when.
