Eastern tiger swallowtail (female)

Papilio glaucus

Description:

Huge swallowtail butterfly (5-6" wingspan). This specimen was absolutely perfect so I assume it had only recently eclosed.

Habitat:

Semi rural wildlife habitat.

Notes:

On bee balm (Monarda) in the butterfly bed. She was extremely active & I struggled to get a decent ventral shot.

Good spot Jacob! I hadn't noticed that & she actually looked very fresh & new. Maybe a bird as you say or maybe the tail got torn while she was eclosing as the wings are particularly delicate then.

Amazing, Karen! It looks like she is missing her left tail! Any ideas? Most likely a bird.
