Northern Brown Snake

Storeria dekayi dekayi

Description:

a little brown snake amongst a large gathering of garter snakes under a piece of plywood, see notes for full story.

Habitat:

meadow

Notes:

I went to the Wainfleet bog to try and get some interesting spottings. While I did see some cool stuff out in the bog, the real highlight of the day happened in a meadow near the parking lot. I saw a very plain piece of plywood sitting on the ground. I thought I'd look under for some insects or maybe salamanders. I was shocked and blown away to see at least 15 snakes under it! I slowly lowered it back and got my camera on autofocus to take some shots. I lifted it back up and took a few photos and then made sure to get some more details. They started to disperse a little at this point, one even going under the grass between my legs! But I calmly counted them, counted 13 but there were more. I also noted there were at least 3 distinct species. I have never seen anything like this before. This looked like the only brown snake out of the pile. Will need some reptile specialist help for all the ID. The shots aren't the greatest because I was holding the board with my left hand will taking shots with my right. I added a shot of the nonchalant board hiding its secrets in pic 5.
