Couroupita guianensis
These are the amazing flowers of the large Cannonball tree (Couroupita guianensis) measuring up to 25 m (82ft) tall and native to Brazil. Most closely allied to the famous Brazil Nut (Bertholletia excelsa) and both belonging to the family Lecythidaceae. These flowers form large bunches measuring up to 3m in length which produce large heavy woody cannon-ball-like fruits ranging from 15 to 24cm in diameter, containing up to 200 or 300 seeds apiece. This photo was taken during a NE Brazil tour in April, 2012.
